There’s a good chance you’re not the only one out there unemployed.
According to the Alaska Regional Health Authority, nearly 14,000 Alaskans were unemployed in February, and the number continues to climb.
For the first time since the recession, unemployment in Alaska was above 10 percent, according to the state unemployment agency.
The unemployment rate is even higher in the northwest.
The jobless rate in northern Alaska is now at 10.9 percent, the Alaska Department of Labor and Industries says.
In Anchorage, unemployment has jumped from 9.6 percent in February to 13.9 per cent in February.
It’s at 13.6 per cent now.
It’s not just job seekers out there.
There are a variety of jobless workers, too.
The average jobless person in Alaska is 37 years old, according the unemployment agency, and there are over 18,000 unemployed adults.
It says the number of unemployed adults is also rising.
“There are people who have lost their jobs, people who’ve lost their homes, people that have lost all of their income,” said Dr. Karen McKeon, the deputy director of the Alaskan Regional Health Agency.
McKeon says there are many people in Alaska who are unemployed and are looking for work.
“They don’t know where to turn,” she said.
“I think people are realizing that the economic downturn is real,” said McKeons mother, Linda McKeony.
“I think that they realize there’s no silver bullet.”
But even if you are not unemployed, there are some things you can do to find a job in Alaska.
In the Northwest, you can find a few jobs.
Here are some tips for finding one.1.
Get a good jobFinding a job is a big challenge in Alaska, where the economy is in freefall.
“The unemployment rates in the region are really at an all-time low, and that’s because there’s a lot of people who are looking to get jobs, especially in the Northwest,” said Alaskas chief of labor.
Alaskals unemployment rate was 8.5 percent in January.2.
Apply for a jobFinding an interview can be tricky in Alaska because many companies are reluctant to hire people.
“It’s a little bit of a challenge because you’ve got a lot more companies who don’t want to hire anybody,” said Edna Tarr, the regional director of employment and training for the Alaska National Guard.
“It’s definitely a little more difficult, because they want to go out and hire people and then they’re not going to be able to do that if they’re trying to hire somebody in the state of Alaska.”
Tarr says employers often hire people who were not looking for a specific position or because they had no job lined up.
That could cause them to be more vulnerable to layoffs, she said.
“I think if you look at the people who lost their job, you’re just looking for the unemployment rate,” she added.
“So that’s kind of a bit of an excuse for why there’s not enough work available.”
If you have a job search, ask for an interview.
The Alaska Regional Labor Council says the average interview for a full-time position in Alaska in February was 11.2 minutes.
That’s a 7.6-minute increase over the same month last year.
In January, the average wait time for an online interview was 7.7 minutes, according a state report.
The waiting times have risen even faster in recent months.
According for a February survey by the Alaska Employment Project, employers are still waiting on about 4,000 job applicants, which is higher than the national average of 3,500.
The regional unemployment agency says that’s a big reason why unemployment in the north continues to rise.
“In addition to the national unemployment rate, the unemployment in northern Alaska is rising faster than the rest of the country,” McKeone said.
“We’re not getting a lot people in the economy, and it’s not clear what’s going to happen to them when the economy picks up.”
So if you don’t have a specific job, talk to your boss.
Alaska’s unemployment office has a job application form that you can fill out.
The process for filling out the form can take about an hour and a half.
If you’re in the market for a new job, the state says you should talk to a recruiter or someone in your company.
If you’re still looking for one, call the unemployment office to find one.
The office also offers a phone number for you to call to get information.
The state unemployment office says if you need to speak with someone about finding a new full- or part-time job, call 675-547-8870 or the state’s toll-free number at 1-800-252-2222.
