Indian army recruits soldiers, ships as it embarks on construction of new navy

New Delhi: Indian army has commissioned warships for the construction of a new navy and the defence ministry is mulling over a plan to build an airstrip and a nuclear power plant.

The ministry has commissioned a team of more than 10,000 personnel to complete a tender to build the navy, the Defence Ministry said on Wednesday.

The plan involves a new carrier based in the port of Kolkata, and the construction, procurement and supply of a nuclear reactor to power a third nuclear plant in Chennai.

The navy has a fleet of around 100 warships and submarines.

The first ship, the INS Arunachal, will be completed in 2017 and the next, INS Visakhapatnam, in 2018.

The new fleet of five warships will include two destroyers and a cruiser, the ministry said in a statement.
