September 2012 Project Update

Last year, I introduced you to some of the EIS team members, and this month, I'd like to present two more of the people who are helping draft the Angoon Airport EIS.

Kari Chalker (shown below) is the lead editor for the Angoon Airport EIS, and in this role, she works with the FAA's team to create an EIS that is written in plain language. Kari works closely with the authors, the GIS staff, and the graphic designer to make sure each EIS section's structure, presentation, and content are correct, consistent, meaningful, and understandable. She draws on her experience as a writer and editor of two published books about Native American cultures, one of which involved interviewing Tlingit jewelers about their work, their heritage, and the deep history of jewelry in Tlingit and other Northwest Coast cultures. Kari hopes to visit Angoon in the near future.

Mike Edelmann is the FAA's Aviation Planner for Southeast Alaska. Mike has been working with me on the Angoon Airport EIS for some time. For this project, Mike evaluated current air travel usage for Angoon and the likely future air traffic for an airport in the community. As an aviation planner, his goal is to accommodate the safe and efficient use of the airport and the aviation system. Mike is an electronics engineer and his previous work with the FAA has been very "hands on" as far as the operation of critical airport equipment. He previously installed air traffic control and navigation aids throughout the nation. Mike is pictured here (below) on a snowy hike in the Chugach Mountains.

On September 19, we will be holding another community visit -- and it will be Mike's first trip to Angoon. Mike and I, along with other members of the EIS team, will be at the Angoon Community Center. As always, we hope you will stop by to share any comments or concerns you may have, or just say hi!

We are really looking forward to chatting with you while we are in Angoon. If you have any questions or ideas to share, please call me at (907) 271-5453 or e-mail me at Thank you for your interest in the project!

Best regards,

Leslie Grey
